I want to play snooker, but I don't know where to do it.

You are not the first person to wonder how to get started playing snooker. Many people will play on six-foot-long tables at home and with friends and then one of them will suggest going to a snooker club... then comes the stumbling block.

It is uncanny that people should not be able to find snooker clubs, because they are some of the most proliferent venues in the world, especially Britain.

The first place to look for a snooker club near you is the Yellow Pages. Just as the advert says, you can find virtually anything in there. Ring around a few clubs, find out their rates and consider each one.

Some clubs will offer annual membership which, on the whole, offers worse value for money and is often indicative of a club short on money and short on members. Other clubs will offer a lifetime membership which often signifies an enhanced value for money.

It is not just membership rates that are relevent. Some clubs will charge you up to £7.00 an hour for the use of a table, while you can find some workers' clubs that will charge 60p an hour using a meter. The standard rate is around £4.00 to £5.00 an hour.

If you are planning to drop in to the club a couple of times a year, it is probably not a problem that you are paying £4.00 - £5.00 an hour. However if you are serious about snooker and wish to practice for several hours a day, the costs of practice can be inexorbitant, sometimes totalling £100 a week.

It is at this point that you should consider breaking away from clubs that don't offer you special rates for playing this much.

Some clubs will offer services where you can pay a fixed sum every week and receive effectively free snooker from thereonin which may reduce you costs by 80 to 90%.

Once you have joined a club, though, you can start to enjoy the great atmosphere and exhilaration that snooker can bring.
